ब्रिटिश पाउंड, जिसे पाउंड स्टर्लिंग के नाम से भी जाना जाता है, सबसे पुरानी मुद्रा है जो अभी भी उपयोग में है। यह एंग्लो-सैक्सन काल के दौरान लगभग 775 ई. में शुरू हुआ था, जब चांदी के पेनी को पहली बार अब के इंग्लैंड में ढाला गया था।

12वीं शताब्दी में किंग हेनरी द्वितीय के शासनकाल में पाउंड स्टर्लिंग इंग्लैंड की आधिकारिक मुद्रा बन गई, जिसमें एक पाउंड मूल रूप से एक पाउंड चांदी का प्रतिनिधित्व करता था।
